INSTRUMENT ASSISTED SOFT TISSUE MOBILISATION

INSTRUMENT ASSISTED SOFT TISSUE MOBILISATION

IASTM is derived from Gua Sha, a traditional Chinese medicine which worked on removing negative energy through the skin. It is a pro-inflammatory treatment involving the use of tools in a scraping motion, to assess tissue quality and expedite the healing process of soft tissues. It does this by:-• treating scar tissue and other soft tissue restrictions• treating chronic inflammation or degeneration• improving alignment and length of muscle fibres• alleviating symptoms of restricted or painful motion• improving motor control issues eg. coordination or muscle activation

There is often a delay in treating injuries, particularly when they are overuse injuries which build up gradually over time, and this means that sometimes the healing process may have already happened ie.scar tissue may have already formed, causing pain and restricted movement. The restricted movement comes from the inability of the muscle to lengthen properly as a result of new collagen crosslinks being created in a disorganised manner.IASTM causes microtrauma to the soft tissue in a controlled manner, stimulating a local inflammatory response, and restarting the healing process so that the injured tissue can be remodelled. This process enables:-• the breakdown of excessive scar tissue• the restructuring of the soft tissue• reorganisation of the cells to promote better movement

IASTM can be particularly beneficial for:-• tendinopathies (Achilles, epicondylitis, patellar rotator cuff)• plantar fasciitis• carpal tunnel syndrome• trigger finger• neck and back pain• sprains and strains• ITB syndrome• myofascial restrictions• post-surgical scarring (particularly post mastectomy and caesarean)

IASTM is a valuable modality which will enhance treatment of both acute and chronic issues and reduce recovery time by breaking down scar tissue, through application of force to both broad and specific areas.

EXPECTATIONS FROM IASTM TREATMENT

• IASTM re-injures the body in a controlled manner, and to a lesser degree

• there may be some discomfort during treatment

• there may be some soreness in the area following treatment

• treatments will vary for each individual, but usually 2 treatments per week for up to 5 weeks, with positive results being evident by the 3rd or 4th treatment

• exercise after IASTM treatment is important to stretch and strengthen the muscles, and improve flexibility

Research has shown that:-

• IASTM may impact on physiological changes by:-- improving blood flow- reduction in tissue viscosity- myofascial release- interruption of pain receptors- improvement of flexibility of underlying tissue

• IASTM is can effectively reduce pain levels and improve function in under 3 months
